Finally…Maine Materializes

And…our flight arrived. The hope had been to arrive at noon, get our car, and spend the day near Bangor, so we could meet our last traveling partner at midnight. The reality: we arrived after 5 and Madison was delayed, delayed, delayed…canceled. Despite the cancellation being American’s fault (mechanical issues), and American Airlines placing her on a red eye the next morning, they would not offer her a room. Why? Her flight originated in Kansas City and her address was just under the required miles that would allow American to provide accommodations. Returning home for the evening was not an option for Madison, so she slept and worked in the airport overnight.

Meanwhile in Maine…

Bangor’s airport provides eight gates for its travelers. Compared to MCI’s 40 gates, Bangor feels petite. Upstairs contains the eight gates, and downstairs provides the check-in counters, baggage claim, and car rental area. Our best moments included: three weary travelers, two older ladies, and the entire car rental facility. With business dealings at a minimum, the rental companies had time to laugh at our antics (we are VERY funny 🤣), provide insights into the city, and get us on our way. We chose a Jeep Wrangler Sahara as our ride, and Hannah was our main driver.

Madison’s flight had not been canceled yet, so we decided to stay relatively close to the area. Our car rental associate recommended the Timber restaurant, so we headed that way. Mmm…mmm…mmm…not only was the food exceptional, the wait staff was pleasing to the eye. The staff created an incredible atmosphere for our first meal in Maine.

I’d love to tell you I began this Maine experience with lobster or seafood. However, it’s at this moment, I’ll admit the truth. I’m a very picky eater. I want to love food, but I don’t. As an international traveler, it’s a huge detriment. I can’t always recommend the local fare as I don’t always enjoy its taste. At Timber, I did eat a mouth watering 24-Hour Short Rib “Filet”, so if you desire beef, this was the best. I still dream of it today :).

We finished eating then decided to check out the giant Paul Bunyan statue next door. Standing at an impressive thirty one feet tall and weighing in at 3700 pounds, this statue was gifted to Bangor to celebrate its 125th anniversary. Located in the base is a time capsule, buried on December 31, 1959, that will be opened February 12, 2084 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Bangor. Paul stands proudly in Bangor as this city was once known as the “Lumber Capital of the World.”

While hanging out with Paul, we found out Madison would be delayed until the next day, so we headed to the hotel. We drove to the Colonial Inn in Ellsworth for the evening. And with that…the excitement would start July 31!
